Why The UK Is Charging Its Fleet to a Sustainable Future

Statistics show that the UK’s largest emissions of greenhouse gases come from Britain’s roads at a staggering 91%.
With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that the country is charging towards more sustainable driving options, most obviously in the form of electric vehicles.
More and more road users are moving away from petrol and diesel cars, as consumers become increasingly conscious of their impact on the environment. In addition to individual drivers, many businesses are shifting their fleets from fossil fuels to electric in order to pave the way for a more sustainable future.
In this article, the team here at The Windscreen Company will take a closer look at the benefits of electric vehicles, and how more and more companies are opting for them.
As previously mentioned, emissions from Britain’s roads make up the most significant environmental damage in the country, so, unsurprisingly, the biggest benefit of electric vehicles is that it eradicates these emissions.
Both customers and companies are more aware now than ever before of the impact of climate change and the damage it can bring to our planet. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most harmful substances on Earth, and is something that is produced in massive amounts by petrol and diesel cars with these gases released from exhaust pipes. But with EVs, this is not the case, and the lack of these substances means an individual’s carbon footprint is significantly decreased. When you consider a fleet of vehicles in a commercial setting, it becomes clear to see how much of an environmental benefit it would bring to switch from traditional fuel to electric cars.
In addition to the lack of greenhouse gases that are emitted, another fantastic environmental benefit of electric vehicles is that they can improve air quality. Neighbourhoods and areas with more EVs are likely to have cleaner air, therefore making it healthier for people to breathe.
Electric vehicles can also provide organisations with financial benefits, too. While the initial cost of an electric vehicle can be more than a fuel alternative, they’re typically cheaper to maintain. Plus, they’re eligible for a whole host of tax reliefs, government grants, clean air zone waivers and more.
As well as the obvious environmental implications of fuel cars, many businesses are making changes to their fleet ahead of a big legislative change that’s coming into force in 2030.
In 2020, then Prime Minister Boris Johnson, announced that from 2030 onwards, no new petrol or diesel cars will be allowed to be sold in the UK. This came alongside a number of other environmental pledges including wind, nuclear and public transport schemes. This was part of a larger scheme to make the entire UK carbon neutral by 2050.
Currently, all electric vehicles are exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty but this will change in 2025 – meaning now is the perfect time to invest in an EV to avoid this tax.
If you’re wondering whether your company should take the plunge and go electric, it’s worth considering some of the companies that have already done so.
Some of Britain’s biggest and most recognisable commercial names have joined forces to create the Electric Vehicle Fleet Accelerator (EVFA), a group of high-profile businesses that hope to encourage others to follow suit.
They include:
With 70,000 vehicles between them, the seven companies aim for all of their vehicles to be fully electric by the UK’s 2030 deadline.
