What Is a Hydrophobic Windscreen?

A hydrophobic windscreen is a windscreen that can repel water. A special coating is used that causes moisture, such as raindrops, to slide off the glass when it lands – improving visibility in wet conditions.

While they are not yet commonplace, they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in Japan, and it is a technology that is likely to develop further in future years.

In this article, the team here at The Windscreen Company will take a closer look at hydrophobic windscreens and the benefits they offer.

What is a Hydrophobic Windscreen

How do hydrophobic windscreens work?

A hydrophobic, or water-repellent, windscreen has a special coating –usually made from silica or fluorine – that is applied to the surface of the glass. This creates a slick, non-stick layer to the windscreen that water droplets do not adhere to and can more easily be moved off by the wipers.

As the UK is no stranger to rainy weather, these types of windscreens are especially useful. What’s more, these windscreens also make it easier to remove any dirt or grime that may have formed.

At the moment, only a few manufacturers, such as Jaguar Land Rover, Ford and Volkswagen, offer hydrophobic windscreens in the UK on selected models, but DIY spray kits are available. Here, you simply spray the coating on yourself, but be aware that it is not as long-lasting as on vehicles that come with it already fitted.

Benefits and uses in the UK

There are many great benefits of hydrophobic windscreens, including:

  • Enhanced visibility – Hydrophobic coatings can significantly improve a driver’s visibility during rain as water is repelled. Instead of forming across the glass, the water beads and slides off quickly, which also reduces glare and distortion when driving at night.
  • Ease of cleaning – A treated windscreen also resists the buildup of grime, dirt and debris. This means the windscreen is easier to clean and there is less need for persistent scrubbing. This is because dirt simply doesn’t stick as easily.
  • Better reaction times – Improved visibility translates directly into faster driver reaction times. When you can see clearly, you are better equipped to identify hazards and apply the brakes.
  • Reduced wiper wear – Because water and debris slide off the glass effortlessly, you will rely less on your windscreen wipers. This reduces friction and minimises wear on the wipers and therefore extends their lifespan.

As well as the automotive sector, hydrophobic windscreens or glass are used in the UK in aerospace, the marine industry and on solar panels.

Should you consider one for your vehicle?

If you regularly drive in rainy conditions, a hydrophobic windscreen coating can be worthwhile. It is particularly beneficial for commuters and motorway drivers who are more likely to experience adverse conditions. If you live in a rural or coastal location, you may also want to consider it, as spray and debris on your windscreen will be more likely.

However, if you’re using a DIY spray, be aware that it will need to be reapplied every few months.
