Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) regulations for trucks were previously the UK’s main standards for ensuring these vehicles were safe to drive. However, while many people still refer to this legislation, VOSA no longer exists and was formerly replaced by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in 2014.
Now, DVSA has taken on the responsibility for outlining truck safety standards and in this article, the team here at The Windscreen Company will take a closer look at what these regulations are and some of the rules they set out.
The DVSA regulations for trucks cover a wide range of areas, including:
If you use a truck or HGV for commercial purposes, you may need an operator’s licence. This is mandatory for all goods vehicles that weigh more than 3,500kg, and the licence ensures that the vehicle is properly maintained and all transport laws are being followed. This licence also guarantees that drivers have the appropriate training to drive the vehicle safely. To apply for an operator licence, you need to make an application through the online Vehicle Operator System.
No matter what you drive, vehicles must always be kept in a roadworthy condition. This includes regularly maintaining the vehicle, reporting any defects and carrying out repairs as and when it is necessary. All areas of the truck need to be maintained, including windscreens. If any damage, such as chips or cracks, has appeared on the windscreen glass, you must address it immediately. At The Windscreen Company, we can take care of glass repairs or replacements on any kind of truck or HGV.
DVSA regulations also focus on the conduct and behaviour of truck drivers. All drivers must adhere to certain regulations in relation to driving hours, rest periods and managing tiredness. It’s also important that businesses ensure their drivers are driving safely and sensibly when behind the wheel of commercial vehicles, as they could be liable for any accidents.
Drivers are legally required to carry out daily checks on their vehicles before embarking on a journey – this includes a visual inspection every day. If any damage or defects are spotted, they must be reported and rectified as soon as possible.
All trucks will come with weight limits that are stipulated in the vehicle’s manual. It is illegal to go above these limits as it can make the vehicle dangerous to drive.
