Top 10 Causes of Road Rage Incidents

Keeping your cool on the road is vital for everyone’s safety. Giving in to anger or impatience can put your passengers at risk, along with pedestrians and other motorists. When road rage truly gets out of hand, it can lead to altercations, property damage or even death from collisions.

Spotting the causes of road rage can help you recognise aggravating behaviour so you can avoid doing it yourself, and stop yourself from reacting in a way that could escalate the situation.

Top 10 causes of road rage incidents

Tailgating

Tailgating

When a vehicle drives too closely behind us, it can really be infuriating. Not only is it intrusive, but it can also be dangerous if you are required to brake suddenly.

Hogging the middle lane

Spending too much time in the middle lane can ramp up congestion and leave other lanes underused. This behaviour means other motorists have a reduced capacity to overtake vehicles on slower lanes. Middle lane hogging is also illegal, and the law states that on three-lane motorways, you should remain in the left lane when the road ahead of you is clear.

Driven to distraction

Speaking on a phone, texting or being otherwise distracted while driving is incredibly dangerous, so it’s no wonder that driver distraction incites road rage. In some cases, it’s illegal, as only hands-free phone calls and messaging are allowed.

Too fast or too slow

We all know that speeding is dangerous and risks the lives of other motorists and pedestrians. However, driving too slowly can also be hazardous. It can result in a backup of beeping vehicles behind the slow vehicle.

Impatience

Running late to an appointment or just trying to go about our day efficiently can lower our patience threshold on the road. Behaviours and incidents that wouldn’t normally bother us can become real aggravations, increasing the risk of road rage incidents.

Overtaking on the inside

Overtaking on the inside is also known as undertaking, and refers to overtaking a slow-moving vehicle on its left-hand side. Known to be dangerous, the Highway Code advises strongly against it.

Lack of indication

Late indication or no indication at all can leave other vehicles confused or abruptly braking in response to certain actions due to a lack of warning. Lack of indication is incredibly unsafe and discourteous to other motorists, so is a frequent trigger of road rage.

Traffic jams

Being stuck at a standstill is infuriating for everyone. Whether you have somewhere to be or you just don’t want to waste your day, traffic jams are unfortunately part of being a driver, but that doesn’t stop some people from losing their cool in these situations.

Cutting off

When someone moves in front of you without warning or adequate space, this is known as cutting off, and it can be incredibly alarming, potentially leading to collisions.

Littering

This may not seem like an obvious one, but watching another driver chuck litter from their window and drive off can be incredibly irritating, not to mention potentially unsafe for other road users, depending on what they have thrown away.
