Your car’s glass plays a fundamental role in the overall safety of your vehicle. To keep you and your passengers protected in the event of an accident, it’s vital that you have the correct type of glass in place on your vehicle.
At The Windscreen Company, we’re experts in all aspects of car glass, regularly installing quality products on vehicles of all makes and models and repairing and replacing car windows.
The two main types of car glass are laminated glass and tempered glass. In this article, we’ll explore both of these options, explaining what they are and the benefits they bring.
Laminated car glass is created using two plies of glass that are bonded together to produce a strong, durable layer. Laminated glass is predominantly used for car windscreens because of its durability and robust nature, which means it offers greater protection to a vehicle’s occupants should an accident occur.
Though laminated glass is known to crack easier than alternative options, it is able to stretch and bend upon impact which means it’s less likely to shatter. As well as this, it offers fantastic noise insulation properties meaning the sounds of the roads won’t prove too disruptive.
As previously mentioned, laminated glass is usually only used for windscreens; this is because it’s more expensive than other glass options. Furthermore, if an accident does occur, it’s important that occupants of the vehicle have a way to get out of the car.
Sometimes during a collision, people are unable to use the doors to exit which means that smashing the side or passenger windows is the only option. Laminated windows are extremely difficult to smash, meaning that people can become trapped inside the vehicle if all the windows are of this type.
Most windows in a car, other than the windscreen, are made from tempered glass. Tempered glass has been around for hundreds of years, with origins reaching back to the 1600s.
Also known as safety glass, the tempering process involves strengthening a sheet of glass by cooling its temperature which makes it more robust. While it’s not as strong as laminated glass, when tempered glass does break it does so in a harmless manner.
The glass will shatter into tiny, non-cutting fragments that can easily be exposed to the skin without harming it. This makes it extremely safe if an accident does occur, providing people with an escape route through windows should they need it.
As well as this, tempered glass is also extremely lightweight meaning your vehicle will consume less fuel during its journey.
