How To Recycle Windscreen Wipers

With it becoming increasingly important to recycle many of the items we use in daily life (including recycling windscreens), you may be wondering how to recycle your old, worn out windscreen wipers.

Windscreen wipers are made up of two different components, a metal part and a rubber wiper. Due to the harsh weather the windscreen wipers have to endure, it’s no wonder they need to be replaced quite regularly, averaging about a change every year. You can make your windscreen wipers last longer by carrying out a few maintenance tasks.

Maintaining your windscreen wipers

• Clean the rubber squeegee with water to remove any dirt.
• Refrain from using your windscreen wipers when the windscreen is icy. Use your de-icer fluid and ice scraper to remove the ice beforehand.
• When not using your car in the winter, pull your windscreen wipers away from the windscreen. This prevents ice developing on the rubber squeegees and drying them out, then sticking to your windscreen when you go to use your car.
• Clear your windscreen of any leaves or other foreign objects every time you fill up your car.

Signs you need to replace your windscreen wipers

A variety of factors can influence your windscreen wipers wear and there are a few signs that your windscreen wipers need replacing:

• Streaking – This occurs when the rubber squeegee dries out and begins to crack from harsh sunlight. This can also develop when foreign substances get onto the rubber surface, such as road tar. When the windscreen wipers are in use, they’ll leave behind streaks of rain, instead of removing it from the windscreen.
• Skipping – When the blade begins to ‘jump’ across the windscreen when in use, thereby no longer fulfilling its use and will need replacing.
• Squeaking – If the rubber has dried out too much, the windscreen wiper will drag across the windscreen and produce an annoying noise which can be distracting from driving.

Recycling windscreen wipers

Luckily, the components making up the windscreen wipers are easily recycled, as metal and rubber can be readily converted and incorporated into other products. Simply remove the rubber squeegee from the metal component and place the respective materials into the appropriate recycling bins.

If your metal component is still in good condition and it’s just the rubber squeegees that need replacing, gently slide them out and dispose of the rubber in the recycling bin. Take your new rubber squeegees and slide them into the compartment, making sure they are secure by fastening the clamps shut.
