Keeping warm during the winter months is bound to be a priority, and this includes when going out and about in your car.
Not only does a warmer car provide you with a more pleasant driving experience, but it also helps to keep your windscreen clear, reducing the risk of accidents due to impaired visibility.
However, keeping your car warm when the temperature drops is easier said than done. In this article, The Windscreen Company team will provide you with our top tips to maintain heat in your car in winter.
Many people switch their engines on early before setting off to allow their cars to heat up. While this can work, we’d suggest only doing so around 30 seconds before.
Keeping your car idling for too long can waste fuel, is bad for the environment and actually doesn’t warm up the car that much. About 30 seconds is long enough to be effective without being wasteful.
Most modern cars come with heating systems and defrosters that can be used to clear frost from windscreens in the morning.
As well as ensuring clear visibility, they can also help to heat up the vehicle from the inside. Using your heater and defroster simultaneously is a great way to warm your car up.
Keeping your car in a garage overnight is one of the best ways to keep it warm come the morning. During freezing weather conditions, this can also help to keep your vehicle’s engine protected.
If your garage is insulated, then this is even better, but simply sheltering it from the elements is always going to be better than nothing.
If you’re experiencing a particular problem or the weather is especially cold, then you may want to consider installing an engine block heater.
These innovative devices are fairly cheap to buy and are a great way to stop your engine from getting too cold during winter. They can preheat your engine ahead of time but without any of the associated environmental or performance issues that come with idling an engine.
In some cases, you can even set a timer for the device to activate at a specific time, meaning your engine is nice and warm when you need it.
The less fuel in the tank the more likely it is that condensation will become an issue. As well as creating colder car conditions, condensation can freeze which may lead to all sorts of other problems.
The best way to counteract this is to ensure your tank is always well fuelled, and not to wait until it’s almost empty before topping it up.
