From lying on a beach to relaxing in a beer garden, there is plenty to enjoy about the summer months when the sun is shining and temperatures are on the up. However, heat waves are not all pleasant, especially when humidity is high and there is an absence of air conditioning.
Our cars are perhaps one of the most stuffy and sweaty environments during spells of intense heat, and keeping them cool is about more than just comfort.
Severe heat can actually damage windscreens, causing cracks to form – especially if it already has some minor chips or scratches. With this in mind, the team here at The Windscreen Company has put together a handy list of hacks to keep your car cool during the summer months.
Perhaps the most obvious hack on our list, parking in the shade is the best way to keep your car cool. Consider the time of day when parking in a shady spot, though, as the sun moves throughout the day. The sun will be at its highest point around noon, meaning shade will be harder to come by. Many people choose to park in streets where there is tree coverage, but bear in mind that this does run the risk of birds using it as a toilet!
You can use a sunshade to keep your car cool. These handy accessories can be used to block the sun’s rays from entering your vehicle, keeping it at a comfortable temperature and stopping harmful UV rays from damaging the interior. You can even get a sunshade for the car’s exterior, which you can place on top of your windscreen to protect it.
It might seem obvious, but make use of your car’s air conditioning system. This is a quick and easy way to cool the car down, and air can even be directed to your windscreen to keep the glass at a safe temperature. When driving at high speeds, this is often preferable to opening windows.
This neatly leads us onto opening the car’s windows. Leaving them open just a crack when parked can encourage cool air to circulate and stop the interior from getting too hot. When driving at low speeds, it is often more efficient to open a window while driving than to use your air conditioning.
Tinting your car’s windows can reduce the amount of heat entering your car — protecting windscreens and interiors. However, there are strict legal guidelines about how dark you can make windows, so make sure you check this first.
Unless your journey is necessary, consider driving at a cooler time of day. The middle of the day tends to be the hottest time, so schedule your trip for early in the morning or later in the evening if possible.
When not in use, park your car inside your garage, if you have one, rather than on the driveway. This will keep the windscreen and the car’s interior out of sight from the sun’s strong rays, keeping it nice and cool for when you need it.
