Does Claiming for a Windscreen Affect Your Insurance?

Windscreen insurance is a type of cover that many car insurance companies offer if a windscreen has been chipped, cracked or smashed.

This means that if your windscreen has sustained damage of any kind, you will not have to pay for the repairs or replacement out of your own pocket.

But does claiming for a windscreen negatively impact your premiums, no-claims bonus or any other insurance policy considerations?

In this article, The Windscreen Company team will take a closer look at how claiming for a windscreen may affect your car insurance.

Does claiming for a windscreen affect your insurance?

Does claiming for a windscreen count as a claim?

This will depend on the specifics of your insurance policy.

Not all car insurance policies will automatically include windscreen cover, but if you opted for a fully comprehensive type then it most likely is included. Usually, you will have the choice as to whether the windscreen cover is part of the main policy or as a separate add-on.

It is best to add the windscreen cover separately as this will usually mean a lower excess than adding it under the main policy. Plus, having separate cover means you won’t lose your no-claims bonus on your main policy.

In some instances, windscreen cover may also cover panoramic sun roofs but you should always consult the details of your specific policy.

Will my insurance premium go up?

No, in most cases a windscreen insurance claim will not increase your premium.

Again, this will vary from policy to policy so be sure to check yours carefully. If you’ve had a windscreen repaired or replaced within the last five years you may need to declare it, but this shouldn’t impact your premiums.

Typically, the things that will increase your premiums include:

  • Driving history
  • Age
  • The type of car
  • Mileage
  • Voluntary excess

Will you lose your no-claims bonus?

In most cases, making a windscreen claim will not impact your no-claims bonus. However, this will depend on the specifics of your policy, so it is always worth going through it carefully to make sure.
