The automotive industry is constantly evolving, with manufacturers and technology giants regularly introducing new innovations to vehicles.
2023 will be no different and while it remains to be seen exactly what developments the year will bring, there have already been some clues about the direction of travel. In this article, the team here at The Windscreen Company will place particular focus on car windscreen technology for 2023, outlining some of the key changes and progress we might see this year.
Head-up display, or HUD, isn’t a new development but 2023 could see it take another step forward. The technology sees text, images and sometimes even 3D animations projected onto the windscreen in front of the driver. This can include things such as speed limits, road signs, fuel levels and much more.
The purpose of the technology is to provide drivers with quick access to key information regarding their journey without them having to take their eyes off the road.
In 2023 this technology looks set to advance further, and technology company Continental has won a CES 2023 Innovation Award for its cutting-edge scenic view head-up display. Unlike conventional head-up displays, Continental’s version does not project displays onto transparent areas on the windscreen. Instead, it reflects the information onto a specially coated black printed area on the lower edge of the windscreen. This means an image is produced across the entire width of the windscreen rather than just one section.
Anyone who has spent time driving in the UK knows that, in the colder months, frost or fog on the windscreen can impair a driver’s vision. This means that the potential for an accident is increased.
One way to counteract this is heated windscreens. Perfect for drivers who live in colder parts of the world, heated windscreens can defrost or defog the vehicle far faster than normal windscreens with the heat restoring the vision of the driver. This means that drivers will not have to rely on their vehicle’s interior heating systems to clear the windscreen.
While a small number of vehicles already have heated windscreens, this is likely to increase further in the future.
Mostly associated with smartphones and other digital devices, Gorilla Glass looks to be making its way into the automotive industry. Gorilla Glass is scratch-resistant and prevents your phone’s screen from smashing when dropped. Now, car manufacturers have noticed the impact the glass has made in the tech world, and have begun steps to install them on vehicle windscreens.
As well as being durable and robust, Gorilla Glass is also extremely lightweight, meaning vehicles can save money on fuel, too.
Numerous car manufacturers have been working on a wiperless windscreen wiper system and 2023 could be the year when we begin to see more and more of this innovation.
British sports car brand McLaren has been leading the way in this area, utilising ultrasonic technology typically found in military fighter jets. This technology works by mounting a transducer (an electronic device that converts energy) on the windscreen which produces an ultrasonic force field that will repel rain and prevent it from landing on the windscreen.
While this technology is still in its infancy, 2023 could be the year when breakthroughs are made.
