Yes, it is possible to wash your car’s windscreen after a windscreen replacement, but not straight away. However, we would recommend that you wait 48 hours before hand-washing your new windscreen to ensure the glass has adhered correctly and prevent it from falling out of place.
At The Windscreen Company, we have spent more than 25 years providing leading windscreen repairs and replacements to drivers across the West Midlands and the South East. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at washing your car’s windscreen as well as other tips you should be aware of following a windscreen replacement.
As mentioned above, you can hand wash your car’s windscreen after the windscreen has been replaced, but you need to wait at least 48 hours.
Washing the glass too soon can cause the curing process to become disturbed, weakening the adhesive and the seal. Not only can this cause leaks to occur, but in extreme cases, the glass might become completely displaced.
In the same way you’ll need to wait before washing your windscreen by hand, you will also need to wait before using a jetwash. However, in these cases, you’ll need to wait at least five days. This is because the high pressure of these devices can damage the new seal, and your windscreen may become dislodged.
As well as making sure to wait 48 hours after your new windscreen has been installed, there are a range of other things you should be aware of to ensure your glass adheres properly and remains in the best condition.
After our technicians have carried out the work, be sure to wait 30 minutes before driving your vehicle. This is to allow the adhesive time to dry. While many companies will advise you to wait an hour, we have an innovative product that dries at a faster rate – meaning you can get back on the road sooner.
Try not to slam the door of your car or truck after a new windscreen has been installed. As the adhesive will still be going through the sealing process, forcefully shutting the door can disrupt this and cause problems with the glass.
You should keep your dashboard free of any objects that might interfere with the new glass as it’s sealing. Items that are leaning on the glass can weaken the bond between the frame and the glass, making it harder to adhere.
If your windscreen has become damaged, it’s important that you get it fixed as soon as possible. Ignoring the problem can make it worse and could even leave your vehicle in an unroadworthy condition, so it’s important not to neglect even the smallest chip.
