Can Heated Windscreens be Repaired?

Windscreen technology has changed significantly over the years, with a wide range of different types now available.

One type of windscreen technology that has gained popularity in recent years is heated windscreens.

Originally invented in 1969 before gaining more prominence in the 1980s, a heated windscreen is a type of windscreen that features electrical wires that are integrated into the glass. When the heating is activated, the wires heat up in order to quickly de-ice, de-fog or de-mist the windscreen.

In this article, The Windscreen Company will take a look at whether heated windscreens can be repaired.

Can heated windscreens be repaired

Can heated windscreens be repaired?

Yes, under the right circumstances, heated windscreens can be repaired. However, this will largely depend on the type of heated windscreen you have and its location.

There are a wide range of heated windscreen types, and there are only really two that are eligible for repairs.

Some heated windscreens will only heat a small area of the glass at the bottom of the windscreen. If the damage is small and localised, then you may be able to simply repair it.

Another heated windscreen type that can be repaired is when the heating wires are embedded in PVB between two layers of glass. In these instances, if the damage is minor and has not damaged the PVB then repairs may be possible.

However, in many cases, a full windscreen replacement may be more suitable as repairs will cause the wires to no longer work and heating the windscreen will no longer be possible.

How do you know if you have a heated windscreen?

Most people will know if their car has a heated windscreen.

However, if you’re unsure, it is usually easy to tell by taking a close look at your windscreen glass.

If you can see small, thin wires in the glass on the windscreen then you will have a heated one.

Alternatively, there will be a button on the dashboard inside the car that indicates the windscreens can be heated. You can also consult your car’s manual.

Why you should always get heated windscreens repaired or replaced

Any windscreen damage can be dangerous and should always be addressed as soon as possible.

This is even more pressing when it comes to heated windscreens.

This is because when the heated windscreen heats up, the glass will slightly contract. While this is normal, if you have a chip or crack, the difference between the temperature of the glass, the outdoors and the vehicle’s interior will place great strain on the glass – potentially causing it to crack further or causing damage to become more severe.

When might you need to replace instead of repair?

As mentioned above, heated windscreens can only be repaired in specific circumstances.

More often than not, a full windscreen replacement will be necessary.

This is because the damage can interfere with the wires that heat the windscreen, causing them to be ineffective. Often, repairs will cause the heating system to no longer work, so a full replacement is the best choice in most cases.
