Birmingham’s Busiest Roads

As the UK’s Second City, Birmingham is one of the busiest places in the country in terms of traffic.

More than 200,000 vehicles pass through Birmingham’s city centre every day as people go about their daily lives.

As well as this, statistics show that motorists in Birmingham are 24% more likely to be involved in an accident than the UK’s average. This is perhaps unsurprising given how busy many of the city’s roads are, and it also means that windscreen damage is more likely to occur.

In this article, the team at The Windscreen Company will take a closer look at some of Birmingham’s busiest roads.

Birmingham’s busiest roads

As mentioned above, with thousands of people travelling across Birmingham every day, it’s perhaps no surprise that accidents happen.

However, it’s still worth understanding where the busiest traffic hotspots are in order to know how to avoid them or to help you better plan your routes.

Birmingham’s busiest roads include:

A5127 Gravelly Hill

While Gravelly Hill itself isn’t too bad, depending on the time of day, the southbound section that connects to the M6’s famous Spaghetti Junction is a major route into Birmingham. This means that at peak times it can be extremely busy.

In fact, drivers can expect to spend an extra 71.6 seconds per mile, on average, when travelling on this road.

A457

This local A-road runs through Winson Green, past Birmingham City Hospital and into Cape Hill. Drivers often spend an extra 142.1 seconds (more than two minutes) per mile when travelling on this route.

A4092

Another nearby road where congestion is busy is the A4092. Another local A-road, it runs from Smethwick into Winson Green where it joins the A457 discussed above. Drivers can expect to spend an extra 170.4 seconds per mile on this road.

Other busy roads to be aware of include:

  • A4540 New John Street – this road is between Hospital Street and Lucas Circus.
  • A45 Coventry Road – this road is between Berkeley Road and Rowland Road and Steyning Road.
  • A456 Hagley Road – this road is between Portland Road and Lordswood Road.
  • A38 Bristol Road – this road is between Speedwell Road and Priory Road.
  • A34 – this road is between New John Street West and Newbury Road.

How to avoid accidents on busy roads

If you need to travel on any of Birmingham’s busy roads, there are a few precautions you can take to best protect yourself from accidents.

This includes:

  • Stay alert – Remain focused and pay attention to your surroundings, anticipating the behaviour of other drivers.
  • Be patient – Being stuck in traffic can be frustrating, but avoid rushing or making hasty decisions.
  • Keep your distance – Stick to the Highway Code’s guidelines on keeping a two-second gap to the car in front.
  • Use technology – Use navigation apps to avoid congested areas and plan safer routes when possible.
