It’s been a turbulent couple of years for the automotive industry. From the instability caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to the shortage of semiconductor chips that wreaked havoc in the sector, one area that has seen solid growth has been the electric vehicle (EV) market.
This trend has continued in recent months, with there being a notable rise in June. On the list of top ten cars sold in the month, 70% of them were EVs. The remaining three cars were petrol-fuelled, with no diesel cars featuring in the list at all.
On average, electric cars took 27 days to sell on British forecourts compared with their electric and diesel counterparts which took 33-35 days. This is a significant shift from the same month in 2021, where the top ten vehicles sold included seven diesel vehicles, two petrol cars and one hybrid – not a single EV made the cut.
The most popular electric vehicles in June 2022 were the Mini Electric, Tesla Model 3, MG MG5 and the Hyundai IONIQ 5. All four of these vehicles took an average of just 24 days to sell; the national average is 31 days.
The rise in electric vehicle sales in June continues at an upward trajectory that has been growing for some time. In January, electric car sales doubled when compared to the same month in 2021, with the Kia e-Niro proving the most popular.
But why are people making the decision to go electric?
Well, there are a variety of factors why people are making the shift.
Perhaps one of the reasons why we’ve seen such recent changes is down to the current fuel crisis. Global factors have meant that the price of crude oil has risen sharply, with motorists experiencing unprecedented costs for petrol and diesel. It’s predicted that the cost of motor fuel has increased by more than 42%, and prices are at a record high for the UK. In fact, in some places, people are spending up to £2 a litre.
With this in mind, some motorists could be making the decision to opt for an EV. While the initial cost may be expensive, they’re cheaper to fuel than those that require petrol or diesel.
While the cost of fuel is undoubtedly having some impact, consumer habits had begun to shift long before the current crisis. This is primarily down to the public’s attitude towards climate change and looking for greener solutions. Whatever the individual’s motivation behind getting an EV, it’s clear to see it is now a huge part of the industry that is here to stay.
