In 1999, Manchester United were winning the treble, the Euro was introduced as a European currency and Star Wars was returning to cinemas in what was a historic year.
For The Windscreen Company, 1999 holds extra special meaning as it was the year our business was created.
We’ve gone from strength to strength in the more than 25 years since, and we’ve put together a timeline of some of our biggest moments and achievements from the last quarter of a century.
While 1999 marked 25 years since The Windscreen Company started business, it holds a double meaning as 2024 also marked an incredible 50 years in the industry for our founder Barry Hegley.
He started his career in the world of windscreens back in 1974, originally starting as a windscreen fitter for Highway Windscreens. He wasn’t working as a fitter for long though, and had soon worked his way up to the company’s management team.
In 1999, Barry made the decision to open his own windscreen business and The Windscreen Company was born. Based in Ipswich, he started the company with just two vans and two technicians. But the business would soon start to grow exponentially.
Part of The Windscreen Company’s growth has involved opening new depots, and in 2004 the team opened a depot in the town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. In the same year, we expanded our presence in the region by becoming a club sponsor of Needham Market FC, our local football club playing in the Southern League Premier Division Central. We remain a proud sponsor of the club today, with our company logo seen on the club’s shirts and throughout the stadium.
In 2007, we joined Nationwide Windscreen Services, an organisation that brings together the best windscreen companies in the country. Membership in the group allowed us to offer nationwide coverage for the first time.
10 years ago, we launched our new website with the help of the digital marketing agency Adtrak. This allowed us to better display our range of services to our customers and made it easier for people to get in touch with enquiries.
In 2017, we launched our services in Birmingham, further expanding the business. This mobile-only service saw us start with two technicians in the area and we’ve continued to serve the city and its surrounding areas ever since.
A new office was built in Ipswich in 2019, allowing us to accommodate six members of control staff. Plus, to ensure we remained abreast of all of the latest automotive developments, we also launched our ADAS recalibration service. This sees us recalibrate cameras and sensors in vehicles that feature ADAS systems.
The Windscreen Company underwent a rebrand in 2020, and we’ve continued to go from strength to strength ever since. Now, we work on more than 1,200 jobs per month and have stewardship of a fleet of more than 10,000 commercial vehicles.
In 2023, we were proud to open our new 1800 sq ft Birmingham branch as we expanded our operations further. We have five windscreen technicians working from it alongside an ADAS calibration bay and customer waiting facilities.
The year of our 25th anniversary, we’re proud to continue delivering the highest standard of windscreen repairs and replacements to customers across the West Midlands and the South East. To date, we’ve helped more than 400,000 happy customers.
